We usually began to introduce the litter box at about 5 weeks (when momma slows down on cleaning). We use 100% pine pellet bedding (available at most ranch supply stores).  When we place the box in the pen we take each puppy and place them into the box. This helps them to realize its safe. Usually they will automatically began using the box. We clean the box 2-3 times a day depending on how much they have went. 

If you choose to continue with the litter box began with a small area and gradually increase as they have successful days with the box. 

The litter box is great for many reasons but one of the main reasons is if you are not available to take them out to potty they have some place they can go.
